Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances Directive (CMRD)

Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances Directive sets the rules on the minimum requirements for protecting workers against risks to their health and safety arising, or likely to arise, from exposure to carcinogens, mutagens or reprotoxic substances (CMRs) at work, including the prevention of such risks.

BIBM advocates for the development of good practices by both employees and employers. For that reason, we collaborate with NEPSI, the European Network on Silica.

European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)

REACH is the main EU law protecting human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. The REACH aims to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment against harmful substances, assess the safety of chemical substances in use in the EU, promote innovation and competitiveness, promote alternative methods for the assessment of the hazards of substances. The aim is to minimise the administrative burden associated with articles, which involves transferring information obtained from the supplier to downstream users.

BIBM advocates for a fair application of REACH principles to articles (like precast concrete products), where the main role of manufacturers is to ensure that the used substances and preparations are fit for purpose, and that the relevant information is gathered and passed to clients. BIBM also keeps contacts with providers of these substances, ensuring that their conformity for use in precast is assessed.

Urban Wastewater Directive (UWWD)

Urban wastewater is among the main sources of water pollution (if not treated) as it contains organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorous. It can also be contaminated with harmful chemicals, bacteria and viruses. The UWWD aims to protect the environment from the adverse effects of urban wastewater and industrial discharges through effective treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater; ensure advanced treatment of all discharges from highly populated areas; monitor the performance of treatment plants and receiving waters and control of sewage sludge disposal and reuse, and treating wastewater reuse whenever it is appropriate.

We, as BIBM, consider the proper management of wastewater as the first step towards a solution to this environmental problem. We offer precast pipes and attenuation tanks as durable and safe solutions, as they do not leak any substances.
